The link profile A key feature of a website is a comprehensive overview of all incoming backlinks: their number, source, authority, and anchor text distribution.

Characteristics of a healthy link profile

A healthy link profile consists of links from diverse, relevant, and authoritative domains, built up gradually over time. Natural growth—with peaks around newsworthy events, but no sudden surge of hundreds of links within a week—is exactly what Google’s algorithms recognize as authentic.

Red flags in a link profile

Signs that indicate manipulation: an unnaturally high percentage of exact-match anchor text, a large number of links from domains that are clearly off-topic or of low quality, and links that appear in bulk at the same time, often the result of purchased link packages.

Analyzing Link Profiles

Tools like Ahrefs, Majestic, and Moz provide insight into the entire link profile, both from your own site and from competitors, which reveals specific opportunities: which domains link to competitors but not yet to you, and which existing links are risky and should be disavowed.
