Concept
Link Building
Link building is the strategic process of acquiring backlinks from other websites to one's own website in order to improve authority and search engine rankings.
Why Google views backlinks as a trust signal
Google still interprets a backlink as a form of “vote of confidence”: if relevant, trustworthy websites link to you, that’s a signal that your content is worth mentioning.
This principle (derived from the original PageRank algorithm) remains, despite decades of algorithm updates, one of the cornerstones of SEO.
Quality over quantity
A single backlink from an authoritative, relevant industry site generally carries more weight than dozens of links from insignificant or irrelevant websites.
Link-building techniques that rely purely on volume, such as link farms, mass directory submissions, and purchased links, can even be harmful and lead to a Google penalty (as implemented through updates like Penguin).
Types of link building
- Digital PR: mentions through newsworthy content or expert quotes in relevant media.
- Guest blogging: publishing valuable content on relevant industry websites, with a natural backlink.
- Content that naturally attracts links: research, tools, or in-depth guides that other sites want to link to organically.
