Google Ads is Google's advertising platform that allows businesses to advertise in search results, on YouTube, in Gmail, and on the Google Display Network.
The auction model behind Google Ads
Google Ads works through an auction: advertisers bid on keywords, and the final ad position is determined by a combination of the bid and the quality score, the relevance of the ad, keyword, and landing page together. As a result, the highest bidder does not automatically win.
Campaign Types Within Google Ads
- Search Network: text ads for direct search queries.
- Display Network: visual ads on millions of partner websites.
- Shopping: product ads with an image and price.
- YouTube: video ads.
- Performance Max: an automated campaign type that optimizes across all Google channels simultaneously.
Why Relevance Reduces Costs
A more relevant, better-optimized ad can achieve a higher ranking at a lower cost than a competitor with a higher bid but lower relevance. This makes continuous optimization of ad copy, keyword selection, and landing page just as important as the available budget.
