GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the process of optimizing content so that it is found, understood, and cited by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity.
Ranking vs. Being Cited
Whereas traditional seo focuses on a position in a list of search results, focuses GEO focuses on a fundamentally different goal: citability. Is a page used as a source in an AI-generated response, or is it ignored or misinterpreted?
What AI Systems Need to Cite Correctly
- Structured data: machine-readable facts instead of just plain text.
- Clarity at the passage level: clear, self-contained answers for each section, rather than context scattered throughout the page.
- Consistent Entity Information: same company name, same facts, repeated and linked via
@id-links throughout the site.
Why a Strong Knowledge Base Is Essential
Content without a clear structure or consistent entity data must be interpreted by AI systems without assistance, with the risk that facts will be misrepresented or the source will simply be ignored. It is precisely this type of technical cleanup (consistent @id-references, correct schema markup) We recently implemented this on our own website.
