Mobile-first is the design principle in which a website is first designed for mobile devices and then adapted for desktop, rather than the other way around.
Mobile-first indexing
Since Google made the full switch to mobile-first When it comes to indexing, Google primarily uses the mobile version of a website to determine its ranking, even for visitors who ultimately view the site on a desktop. A website that is well-designed for desktop but poorly optimized for mobile is therefore at a structural disadvantage in the rankings.
Why mobile-first is more than just a trend
With more than half of all web traffic now coming from mobile devices, a website that isn't mobile-friendly is both a seo-risk, such as a direct conversion risk: visitors who have trouble navigating, zooming in, or filling out forms on a small screen will simply leave the site.
Mobile-first in practice
In practical terms, this means that design decisions (font size, button size, loading speed, navigation structure) are first tested on a mobile screen, and only then expanded to include additional space and features for larger screens—not the other way around.
